Regular Doctor Visits

The first thing a senior should do is make sure to have regular trips to the doctor. This is important because a doctor can diagnose health conditions far in advance of any symptoms that might appear. For example they can look at dark patches on the skin and do tests to see if any skin cancer is present long before the cancer is apparent on the skin surface. A senior needs to go to the doctor on a regular basis for checkups.


A senior should be as active as possible. This doesn’t mean strenuous activity or long exercise sessions. A senior should do moderate activity each day such as simple walking or gardening. This helps to keep joints and muscles limber and can help with arthritis conditions as well. Even though you may be older there’s no excuse to keep moving. Many seniors stay active well into their advanced years. It’s important to see a doctor if you have any health conditions before you exercises as some types of exercise isn’t recommended for some medical problems.

Mind Exercise

As important as exercise is, another form of exercise involves exercising the mind. These exercises help with memory as well as reduce the chances of dementia or Alzheimer’s conditions. A senior can do puzzles, brain games, read or perform any other activity that stimulates their brain and memory. Any activities that involve learning something new is a great exercise for seniors and can help stimulate the mind.


Seniors need to watch the diet closely and it’s always good to have a nutritionist help with the diet. Processed foods shouldn’t be consumed and a diet of fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains is recommended. Fiber foods like fruits and vegetables can aid in digestion and they also need to consume more calcium as bones become brittle with age. A doctor or nutritionist can prescribe the ideal diet for a senior as there can be some specific requirements for certain medical conditions.






Water should be the beverage of choice for seniors. One problem seniors often face is dehydration. It’s important to get enough water in the diet to ensure that hydration is at optimal levels. Other beverages are fine on occasion but water should be the staple drink in the diet. Limit the use of alcohol as this tends to dehydrate the body.


Make sure as a senior that you have some way to track all your medications so you know when to take them and how much you need to take. A chart or a list can be made which lists all of your medications and the doses.  Consider giving a copy of this to your family members as it can be given to a hospital in an emergency situation so they know what medications you are currently on.

Home Safety

At home seniors should make sure their home is safe for them to live in. This means that there are railings or handles in the bathroom and other areas that they frequent. This can help seniors reduce the chances of falls. A handle in the tub is ideal for getting in and out of the bathtub.  Handles around the toilet are also ideal for standing up and sitting down. Remove clutter from around the home which can cause a fall or other injury.


A senior should consider having a cellphone nearby at all times. This makes it easy to call health care officials if there’s a problem such as a fall or another health emergency. This can be used when driving in an emergency or out and about in town as well. A cellphone can easily be programmed with health care numbers.
